GRAINS Australia has announced that two barley varieties, Cyclops and Neo CL, have been successfully accredited as malting barley.

Cyclops was submitted by Australian Grain Technologies (AGT) and was accredited as Malting Barley following evaluation by the Malting and Brewing Industry Barley Technical Committee (MBIBTC), under the Grains Australia malting barley classification program.

Cyclops is a high fermentability variety, has broad adaptation and is best suited to low to moderate rainfall regions across Australia.

AGT says Cyclops has excelled across low to medium rainfall regions throughout Western Australia and in ‘softer' environments, Cyclops remains a highly competitive alternative to varieties such as RGT Planet.

Cyclops has a quick-mid maturity, reaching awn peep slightly later than Spartacus CL. The short plant type of Cyclops is similar to Maximus CL and Spartacus CL, resulting in reduced susceptibility to lodging compared with taller barley varieties. Head loss is similar to Maximus CL or Spartacus CL, meaning that Cyclops is less vulnerable to yield loss during windy conditions around harvest compared with some other varieties.

Cyclops also has an improved spot-form net blotch rating over Spartacus CL, and good resistance to scald for those areas affected by this disease.

Neo CL was submitted by InterGrain and was accredited as Malting Barley following evaluation by the MBIBTC, under the Grains Australia malting barley classification program.

Neo CL is an imidazolinone-tolerant, high fermentability barley variety. Neo CL is a mid-maturing barley ideally suited to medium-high rainfall environments across Australia.

InterGrain says Neo offers an outstanding disease-resistance package including excellent resistance to cereal cyst nematode, powdery mildew and the spot form of net blotch, and useful resistance to the net form of net blotch and leaf scald.

Neo CL has a semi-prostrate early growth habit and a medium plant height.
