It is Emma's passion and zest for agriculture that earned her the Kondinin Group and ABC Rural 2020-21 Young Farmer of the Year award, sponsored by McDonald's Australia.

Emma inspires confidence and optimism in the next generation of agriculturists; encouraging young farmers to push boundaries while supporting seasoned operators to implement technology and change.

"My mission is to lead Australian agriculture and rural communities into a bright, resilient and successful future," Emma said.

"As a young farmer, I don't think we should let anything be our barrier. Not age, not gender, not politics. While we have respect for those who have come before us, we need to challenge the expected because if we don't, our industry can't thrive."

Ben White, general manager of Research at Kondinin Group, said that what Emma had achieved by the age of 28 was remarkable.

"What truly sets Emma apart as a young farmer is her desire to share agricultural information both behind and beyond the farm gate," Ben said.

"Emma is driven to positively influence the industry and ensure everyone has the tools they need to succeed."

Emma's agricultural story began on a South Australian sheep station, before studying for a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from the University of Adelaide. After graduating, Emma embarked upon a career in agronomy, beginning on the cotton fields of the Menindee Lakes in New South Wales.

During 2018, Emma and her partner Craig bought a 700ha sheep and cropping property at Lake Cargelligo, NSW, which they run in conjunction with Craig's family's 10,200ha operation.

"Being able to test my knowledge on my own property is critical in getting it right for clients," Emma said.

"I get to push the boundaries and experiment with tools and techniques to see first-hand how they improve production."

McDonald's Australia recognises the contribution of Australian farmers to its business and the economy.

"Emma is a successful business owner, a nationally recognised agronomist, a fledgling farm owner and an inspirational role model for young farmers across the country," said Kylie Freeland, Director of Supply Chain and Sustainability at McDonald's Australia.
