THE Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is holding firm on its stance towards the herbicide glyphosate following calls for an independent inquiry into the chemical.

The APVMA says there is no need for an inquiry into the herbicide glyphosate.

An ABC Four Corners episode aired on television this week questioning the safety of glyphosate products registered for use in Australia.

The program follows a recent decision in the Californian Superior Court to award damages to a man who alleged that glyphosate-based weed-killers caused his cancer.

In response to the Four Corners program, and after Cancer Council Australia called for an independent review into Roundup (a product with glyphosate as the active ingredient), the APVMA released a statement noting it had considered the evidence presented in the Californian case and found no grounds to take regulatory action in Australia.

In the statement, the APVMA said it understands that the public may have concern regarding glyphosate.
