IT'S been a wetter than average six months for much of Australia due in part to the breakdown of last summer’s El Niño pattern through the Pacific, along with the formation of a negative Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) pattern to the northwest of the continent. By Weatherzone meteorologist Alex Zadnik

During the months after the breakdown of an El Niño event, Australia tends to see higher than average rainfall across the eastern and southern states.
