Auto cueing videos on social media, unwanted updates and malware can cause data to be used quickly, leaving users without data when they need it most for banking and financial reporting.

The process of determining the source of leaks can be an iterative process of elimination but in most cases can be stemmed with a little sleuthing and by utilising free malware removal software. Examples include Malwarebytes and Superantispyware.

One NBN user we spoke to found while not selecting to download anything, the internet-connected TV was continually updating firmware, chewing through data. This was discovered by inspecting the router traffic, which can easily be done with most router gateways including those used for NBN Skymuster, and fixed wireless by typing 10.0.0.138 into an internet browser on a device connected to the router.
