Cattle slaughter volume takes a hit

SIGNIFICANT rainfall in northern Australia over summer has resulted in a major reduction of slaughter volumes, however it has fuelled the prospect of the national cattle herd rebuild intensifying, according to the Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) Cattle Industry Projections April Update.

Favourable grazing conditions means producers are holding onto more stock.

The cattle herd is predicted to increase by five per cent to 25.9 million head.
