While all cows know how to eat grass, one old girl has worked out how to operate the dairy feeding system whenever she feels like a feed of grain.
I couldn't resist posting this video of one of our 'senior' milking cows, who has worked out how to feed herself in the dairy.
The old girl is known as 'Kink' as she has a crooked tail, but her bovine brain is as sharp as a tack. She has learn how to press the feed hopper buttons with her mouth to deliver grain to her feed trough. Check out the video — it explains it all!
The feeding system in our dairy consists of a hopper for each individual cow. A hinged door at the bottom of the hopper drops a measured amount of grain each time it is opened by an air ram. The ram is triggered by a button, which is pressed by the milker as the cows walk into the dairy. The amount of grain each cow receives is controlled by how many times each button is pressed.
I was amazed the first time I saw Kink feed herself. I didn't think a cow was smart enough to watch how the system operates, then mimick it herself. I suppose it shows exactly what happens when you combine intelligence and greed!
