Replacing a blown water pump seal? Check the cost of a new pump first.
Last week I put a new water pump in my Fordson Power Major, as the shaft seal was leaking badly in the old one. While the old girl is pretty rough, it only cost $2000 and this is the first repair i have done on it. I use the tractor for raking and baling hay, and also towing a tipping trailer as it has remote hydraulics.
I thought it may make a good workshop article for Farming Ahead on fitting a new shaft seal to a water pump, but on pricing the parts, there is little point.
The cost of the repair kit for the water pump varies from $50 to $70 which includes bearings, seal and a new impeller. But i could buy a completely new one for $110. When i figured out how long it would take to strip the old pump and fit the new parts using the hydraulic press, I was better off getting a completely new pump. The old pump housing was also quite corroded, as well, so it didn't hurt to replace it.
I'm constantly surpirsed at how cheap some of the engine parts for these older tractors are. I've just purschased an engine overhaul kit for an International A414 40hp tractor. This includes pistons, rings, cylinder liners, seals, bottom end bearings and gaskets, all for $500. As long as the crankshaft is OK, its almost a new engine again.
