New Hendra vaccine for horses

New Hendra vaccine for horses

Story Added : 19th May 2011

“A horse vaccine is crucial to breaking the cycle of Hendra virus transmission from flying foxes to horses and then to people, as it prevents both the horse developing the disease and passing it on,” Dr Middleton said.

The virus, which has killed four people since 1994, might be available as early as next year depending on vaccine development, field trials and registration.

President of the Australian Veterinary Association, Dr Barry Smyth, said the vaccine was great news for vets and horse owners, but urged them to continue with precautions to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.

Humans can become infected after handling infected horses, so it is recommended avoiding contact with blood and other body fluids.
