SA farmers flock to succession workshops

As farmers review their season and commence production plans for the year ahead, growers in South Australian have also taken up the opportunity to start their succession plans.

Farmers from Jamestown and surrounding areas attended the free Your family, Your farm, Your future succession planning workshops earlier this month.

General Manager of Rural Financial Counselling Service South Australia (RFCSSA), Kay Matthias said she was extremely pleased with the response to the workshops.

“It is fantastic to see SA farming families using the opportunity to plan for their farming future. Succession planning can be a difficult process but with professional guidance and an open approach it can also be very successful for all involved.”

“We were lucky to be able to engage such a professional group as Kondinin Group to facilitate the workshops and together with Primary Industries and Resources South Australia (PIRSA), we will continue to provide succession planning workshops across much of South Australia,” Ms Matthias said.

Succession planning co-presenter, Kondinin Group’s Debra Beerworth said handing over a business to the next generation was often a challenging process, but remained a top priority for many rural families.

“Australia’s farmers manage significant assets which are the result of hard work, planning and commitment often over more than one generation.”

“Negotiating the succession of management responsibilities and assets from one generation to the next is ongoing, but it is best not to ignore the benefits that can flow from a well-planned succession strategy.”

“Many factors contribute to a successful succession planning strategy including remuneration, preserving wealth, conflict resolution and strategic planning.”

Facilitated by Kondinin Group and supported by RFCSSA and PIRSA, Your family, Your farm, Your future workshops focus on succession planning and what you and your family need to know to maintain control of your farm and family’s future.
