Opportunity of a lifetime for Aussie farmers
Story Added : 04th May 2011
Do you want to know what is driving the global powerhouses of agriculture, including China, Brazil, the US and Europe?
Applications are now open for the next round of Nuffield scholarships.
The popular program runs for 16 weeks, starting with six weeks of international travel.
Scholars then pick a topic related to their farming sector, which comes with another 10 weeks travelling abroad investigating the issues.
For 2010 scholar and Wanaaring NSW farmer, Christine Ferguson, the opportunities unlocked by Nuffield were eye opening.
“This last year I have found myself talking with members of the Committee on Agriculture in the US House of Representatives in Washington DC, researchers at universities across the world, nomadic herders in Mongolia and farmers in India just to name a few,” Ms Ferguson said.
Scholars cover a wide range of subjects, including climate change policy, responsible pesticide application, dealing with cheap barramundi imports, hop production, precision agriculture and grain production in low rainfall environments.
Once scholars have finished their research they become part of a valuable alumni network with members in the UK, Ireland, France, Zimbabwe, Canada, New Zealand and the Netherlands.
Applications are open now and close on June 30.
There are 23 scholarships available.
